2014 – Carly’s Law:
Alabama introduced Carly’s Law, allowing for the University of Alabama at Birmingham to conduct a study on cannabidiol (CBD) oil for seizure disorders.
2016 – Leni’s Law:
Following Carly’s Law, Leni’s Law expanded the use of CBD oil to include individuals with other medical conditions beyond seizure disorders. It provided an affirmative defense for possessing CBD oil for debilitating conditions.
2019 – Compassion Act Consideration Begins:
The Alabama Senate considered the Alabama Compassion Act, but it didn’t pass.
2020 – Introduction of Medical Marijuana Legislation:
Lawmakers in Alabama introduced various bills aiming to legalize medical marijuana. These bills proposed creating a regulated system for medical cannabis use, but none of them were enacted into law.
2021 – The Darren Wesley ‘Ato’ Hall Compassion Act:
Governor Kay Ivey signed the Compassion Act into law. This legalized medical marijuana for qualified patients. As well as marked a significant milestone as Alabama became the 37th state to legalize medical marijuana. This comprehensive legislation established the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission to regulate the medical marijuana program. Allowing for controlled access to medical cannabis for specific debilitating conditions.
